Who are those who want to know God?

“… Thou hast said, I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight. Now therefore, I pray Thee, if I have found favor in Thy sight, let me know Thy ways, that I may know Thee… ” Exodus 33:12, 13 NASB

Who are those who want to know God?

In John chapter 14, there is a wonderful discourse between Jesus and His disciples. One discussion in particular was an exchange with Philip in which Philip asks Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Clearly Philip is a man who yearns to experience God. The problem however, is Philip is a lot like Jesus’ disciples of today. In that most of us want to be shown or experience something without having to learn anything. Jesus answers Philip’s request with an exhortative question of his own. “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know me, Philip?” In other words, how is it that you have listened to my teachings, shared in my miracles, observed my mannerisms, engaged with me relationally and lived with me in intimacy and yet still have not come to know me?

With this one question, Jesus reveals to us that it is God’s intent and desire that we would not just experience Him but that we would learn Him as who He is, in both nature and character. “Take My yoke upon you, and learn (of) Me…” Matthew 11:29. To know God is to embrace a learning/transformation process which is more than just spiritual experience, religious activity or even relational intimacy. To know God is to pursue God’s nature and character as observed through the Scriptures, the revelation of His Son and His engagements with man in such a way as to embrace and implement His character and mannerisms in our own life. To know God is to walk in His ways. It is to be holy as He is holy. It is to love as He loves. It is to be in nature as He is, which He has granted us to achieve through the work of His Son Jesus!

Who are those who want to know God? They are a people like Moses who cried out “let me know Thy ways, that I may know Thee… ” They are a people who want more than experience and religious activity with God, they want God Himself. They want His nature and character manifested in greater and greater measure as they live out their lives in His Son Jesus.

In the days to come we will be endeavoring to search and find Gods ways and the ways of His Kingdom, that we as His current day Moses’ can grow to know Him in intimacy and truth. It is our hope you’ll join us in this wonderful adventure to “learn God.”
