Religion of Convenience, Part II

Out of fear for his own kingdom, king Jeroboam, whose name means, ‘he pleads the cause of the people,’ created a religion of convenience that brought Israel into grave sin. Rather than allowing the people to make the long journey to Jerusalem to offer their sacrifices rightly, he set up golden calves in Bethel and Dan. He also established priests outside of the Levites of anyone who desired to be a priest and even established a “feast” for offerings which the Scripture says he devised from his own heart. (1 Kings 12:25-33)
